Weekly Shipping Market Check: Rates Ease as Shippers Review October Bookings

Skystar Shipping Agencies ·

Ocean freight benchmarks eased this week as China's Golden Week slowed cargo flows, while airfreight prices also cooled on major China export lanes. For Indian exporters and importers, the immediate priority is to check the full shipment cost, confirmed routing and delivery arrangements before booking.

Week ending 11 October 2026. Market readings below are dated 6 and 8 October; they are not live quotations.

Ocean freight: lower benchmarks, mixed conditions by route

Drewry's 8 October assessment put its World Container Index at USD 4,351 per 40ft container, down 2% from the previous week. Shanghai to Los Angeles fell 3% to USD 7,624, while Shanghai to New York declined 2% to USD 10,220.

On European routes, Shanghai to Rotterdam slipped 2% to USD 3,337. Shanghai to Genoa held at USD 3,696. Drewry reported a thirteenth consecutive weekly decline on the Asia to Europe trade.

These are specific east to west spot benchmarks. They do not represent a freight quotation from India, a reefer rate or an inclusive door to door price.

Routing: confirm the service, not just the destination

Freightos reported on 6 October that the Premier Alliance had announced plans for some services to resume Red Sea transits during October. That is a service-specific development, not confirmation that every carrier or India departure has returned to the Suez route.

For customers evaluating Europe or Mediterranean bookings, ask for the planned routing, transshipment port and current transit estimate in writing. A network announcement alone is not a confirmed schedule for an individual shipment.

Airfreight: holiday-related cooling needs context

The same Freightos update reported Far East and China airfreight rates to North America at about USD 5.60 per kg, after cooling by more than 15% in the previous week. Rates to Europe eased 7% to USD 3.83 per kg as demand softened over Golden Week.

Those readings cover those origin markets and reporting dates. They should not be applied directly to an India-origin pharmaceutical or urgent cargo movement. Chargeable weight, product restrictions, handling requirements and the actual flight remain decisive.

India import watch: surcharges still matter

An earlier Maersk notice, published on 17 September and effective from 15 September until further notice, lists an LCL peak season surcharge of USD 50 per W/M for Far East Asia and China shipments to Northwest India, and to Southeast India and Nepal. The notice also says other applicable charges may apply.

This is an existing carrier notice, not a new announcement this week. Check its current applicability and the complete origin and destination charge breakdown when comparing consolidation quotes.

Skystar's planning view for the week ahead

Softer benchmarks are a reason to review quotations, not a guarantee that a particular shipment will cost less. Compare offers on the same cargo, equipment, routing and delivery scope.

Before confirming a booking, check rate validity, space and equipment confirmation, documentation cutoffs, destination free time and the empty return location. For door to door movements, confirm who arranges customs clearance and inland delivery.

For reefer and pharmaceutical cargo, keep the required temperature range and handling plan central to the decision. For African destinations, confirm the applicable cargo tracking certificate and documentation requirements before shipment.

The next question is whether demand recovers after the holiday and whether announced rate increases translate into actual bookings. These are factors to monitor, not confirmed outcomes.
